Wall colours in the bedroom - how to find peace and quiet
Far more than a question of taste
We feel how much colours influence our mood every day. Colours have an enormous power and impact on our mood(s) and our well-being, although the effect of colour goes much further, especially in the bedroom. Studies show that not only the duration and quality of sleep are closely linked to the colour of the walls, but even our sex life.
The bedroom is the number one retreat in our home, because there is no other room where we spend more time than here. In the bedroom, we immerse ourselves in the realm of dreams, come to rest and relax from the hustle and bustle of the day. Deciding on the right wall colour in this room is therefore much more than a question of individual taste, and there are even shades that should be avoided at all costs to ensure a relaxing night's sleep. According to a study by the Sleep Centre in Edinburgh, there is a difference of almost two hours between the most and least suitable wall colour in the bedroom in terms of the average length of sleep at night.
Quality of sleep is quality of life. Take your time to choose the right colour!
Colours transport energies - and different ones at that! And because quality of sleep and quality of life are inextricably linked, choosing the perfect wall colour is particularly important in the bedroom. The choice of colour should be a top priority when furnishing and decorating the bedroom and should be made before deciding on a new bed or wardrobe. Because in addition to the quality and duration of our sleep, the design of our bedroom also has a significant influence on how we feel the next day. Our brain processes around 99 percent of colour information unconsciously, which is why we need to create the atmosphere of our bedroom all the more consciously.
Blue wall colour in the bedroom promotes relaxed sleep
Blue tones are among the absolute colour favourites for our relaxation rooms because they have a relaxing and calming effect, lower adrenaline levels and relax the muscles. Blue colour variations create a calm atmosphere in the bedroom, promote healthy sleep and have a positive effect on interpersonal tensions. And what could be nicer than waking up in the morning in a colour scheme associated with sky and water? Of course, this doesn't mean that the entire bedroom has to be designed in blue, as there are wonderful colour partners in white, natural and grey that neutralise and still allow blue to make a grand entrance.

Green wall colour in the bedroom helps to reduce stress
Our brain equates green with nature, which allows us to calm down in a green colour environment and forget the stresses of everyday life. After blue, green is therefore an extremely popular wall colour for the bedroom, conveying a sense of calm and security and allowing us to recharge our batteries for the next day. If you choose a green colour, you should know that bluish green tones have a relaxing effect and yellowish green tends to invigorate.

Brown wall colours in the bedroom create a cosy atmosphere
Natural tones are perceived by our brain as very pleasant and convey a feeling of cosiness and security. As colours of the earth, they convey reliability and slowness, promote a sense of calm and are therefore ideal wall colours for the bedroom. A study by the travel provider Travelodge even came to the conclusion that couples whose bedroom walls are painted in cosy caramel and cappuccino tones have the most sex.
Yellow and orange wall colours in the bedroom are a fresh kick
Yellow and orange stand for sunshine and a good mood - qualities that they also convey as wall colours in the bedroom. As mood boosters, they are ideal for morning grouches and make it easier to get up. However, hyperactive characters should opt for very soft shades due to their invigorating effect, otherwise they won't be able to calm down.
White wall paint in the bedroom is an overrated classic
Although white dominates the wall design in most houses and flats, this choice should be reconsidered, especially in the bedroom. Although it is neutral, looks tidy and can be combined with anything, a white room can quickly look sterile, uncomfortable and reminiscent of an office. If you still don't want to do without it, you should at least opt for a tinted white that radiates more warmth.
Red wall paint in the bedroom should be used with caution
Avoid purple wall paint in the bedroom
cPurple in its different variations is elegant and stimulating, encouraging creativity and imagination. These colours are ideal for the study or playroom, but just like red, they have no relaxing effect. They are therefore highly unsuitable for bedroom walls. The test subjects in the Edinburgh Sleep Centre study slept almost two hours less in bedrooms with purple walls than those in blue bedrooms. People with difficulty falling asleep and brooding in particular should definitely avoid this intense colour family, as purple is also suspected of causing nightmares.
Helpful professional tips at the end
In the bedroom, colour combinations should remain within the colour intensity range. Strong colours are best combined with strong colours, pastels with pastels, light with light, dark with dark. With dark, green and earthy tones, a ceiling painted in the same colour also reinforces the cosy, homely feeling. Keeping the colour scheme within a colour family brings harmony to the room. In principle, the cooler a colour tone is, the more relaxing its effect. Want to find out more? Have we not mentioned your desired colour?
